Green Acres.

Green Acres.

That’s what I call the farm. I mean, it fits, I’m a city girl with a country boy for a husband. And I love that about him, really I do. I love that he has passed the love of the great outdoors on to the boys as best he can. For me, well, I’m a work in progress. I mean, look at me, blogging indoors when it’s really beautiful outside. Ok, ok, now I’ve guilted myself into making this a short post so I can get out there.

Anyway, you see the new barn (also a work in progress). There was a need for more storage for both tractors, and other large “stuff”. So now we have a big green barn and a red one.

Here’s my country boy working on the tractor… getting ready to dig a hole I ‘spose. Oh, and there’s the red barn in the background.

And the smaller version of the country boy cleaning up around the house. I think that wheelbarrow is full of pine needles that he raked up.

And here is the back of the green barn. It will back to what will eventually be our earth-contact home (meaning it will be built into the side of a hill/berm).

Near to the farm is the Jack’s Fork River, a great river for float trips. Clean, slow moving. We took to boys down there so they could play a little. We just pulled over near a little bridge and they skipped rocks for about an hour. Of course [M] fell in. He fell in because it wasn’t our last stop. If it were, he would have made it out dry. We seem to always have a strange dog come play in the water with us. They just seem to find us. I’ll post some pics later of a cute little dachshund that jumped in off our dock to swim alongside the boys. This one looked like maybe a Jack Russel Terrier mix.

They were looking for the perfect skipping rocks.

  1. Can I just say that I LOVE how my info required sticks?? Does it do that at my place??

Anyway…I LOVED seeing the farm. Or at least part of it here. Now I can get a ‘visual’ when you’re there or talk about it. Keep sharing. ; )

Now why will the barn be built into a hill? And how will that come to happen? I’m curious about that.

  2. Thanks for the comments Laura :) and yes, it sticks at your place too. Very nice, eh?

The house actually will be built into the side of a hill, not the barn. It will be an earthen home to a certain extent but I think ours will have a normal roof and not a grass one.

Next time I’m down there I’ll take some pictures of the holes in the hill. And hopefully it will show more of what I mean… but truth be told, it’s confusing to me when I’m there looking at it so I’m not sure a picture of a hole will help.

  3. Yes, the sticking is very nice indeed. I thought you at least had to start typing for the info to come up.

I see….I thought you meant the barn. One of the Ingall’s homes was built into a hill. In the books anyway. Won’t it be dark in there though? How will you have windows? I need natural light…like I need air to breathe.

  4. I love skipping rocks! We also like to make tall rock piles.

  5. So did you move away from Ofallon? or is this just someplace you have for fun on the side?

  6. Hey Laura,

I know what you mean about the light. Not only does it cheer you up, but it is necessary to have UV light in each room to prevent mold and mildew from growing. Best source is sunlight.

We are going to use skylights and light tubes (which are just shiny ductwork that go to thru the roof) to light every space passively when the sun is out. I’m trying as hard as I can to eliminate power use to live off grid. Having natural light in every room (including closets) is a must for our design. I think it will make the home seem more open and larger too.

Between the wood heat, earth contact design, solar panels, wind turbine, diesel generator (I grow canola and convert it to bio diesel too) solar hot water, and all the other design features, we should be able to live 100% off grid with a very small fossil fuel consumption. Could be zero in a real pinch.

    Cheers,
    Rog

  7. Hey TL, can I edit a post when I dont spel to gud like above?
