So many of you ask about the produce co-op that I coordinate so here’s the 411. There are lots of groups in the St. Louis Metro area… mine is just a small fraction of the number of families participating but there are about 25 in my group. We get a truck delivery of pre-ordered produce every 2 weeks. I sort it out into the group members’ baskets and they come get it.
In today’s economy, it’s a great savings over what you would pay at the local supermarket. Each basket is just $22 and when full, it’s probably about 30 pounds of produce! Sometimes more.
All the group members think basket pick-up days are great! It’s fun to see everyone, although today was super cold and we didn’t get much of a chance to chat… plus we were so behind on our school day that I had to rush off to finish. I need to start scheduling a lighter workload every other Wednesdays because we are always scrambling from 1pm on (usually when the truck arrives). The boys are a great help… they sort the items with me, help deliver baskets to neighbors and put them in the trunks of cars. A few kids usually come too so it’s a social break for the boys. They always look forward to seeing their co-op buddies. And so do I. I have have made such nice new friends and enjoy seeing them every 2 weeks. And it’s nice to see my old friends too… it’s a perfect way to keep in touch with each other…. a fun chat over veggies!
This weeks’ loot: lots of apples, oranges, pears, grapes, bananas, pineapple, avocados, red onions, red potatoes, eggplant, romaine lettuce, celery, green onions, carrots, yellow squash, and zucchini. I’m going to make a hearty vegetable soup tomorrow.

I just always love your photos of the co-op baskets. They scream FRESH! All of the produce looks so much better & fresher than in most stores-and I guess that’s the point of doing this! As well as the $ you save. Do you do it every 2 weeks? Or does everyone in your group take turns?
It is all so fresh. We eat much healthier now that we have this in the house all the time. It’s just easy to do. I was so bad about buying produce at the grocery because I’m so picky. But this way, it’s forcing me to cook it for the family. We all enjoy it.
Oh and I do it each delivery but I have a couple of ladies that back me up in case I can’t be in town, etc. It’s nice to have helpful neighbors and family nearby.
And the cool thing is, when you have someone choosing the fruits and vegetables, you get items to try that you not normally pick up in the store. YUM YUM.
I, too, had a healthy vegetable beef soup and the fresh pineapple lasst time was wonderful! It’s exciting to get the produce because it gives you something to plan meals around.
I think everyone for the most part is happy with the variety. We’re always going to get something that’s not a family favorite but it’s nice when you can find a recipe to use that veggie in a way your family will eat. I have a great carrot casserole that the family will eat and we’re not big carrot people beside pot-roast carrots
Well that works out really good!! We eat lots of vegetables, and my kids love all vegetables too. They all love carrots, but I don’t like those much. I cook them anyway, and eat them anyway, since everyone else does like them, and I should be a good example. But there are just a couple of vegetables I may NEVER introduce them to, because I don’t want to have to be a good example and have to eat too. lol. BEETS comes to mind. Ugh. : /

Good read. I’m stunned I have not noticed this post before. I will be bookmarking your site. Thanks again.
