Watch out for that tree!

Watch out for that tree!

Ok, so we have this book that is sort of a field guide to being a “free-range” child. It’s called 50 Dangerous Things (You Should Let Your Children Do). It’s not teaching them to build a nuclear device or plan a hostile takeover of a 3rd world nation… it’s just filled with stuff that we did as kids. And yes, it advises you of the risks involved with each activity and parents should obviously supervise most of them… but, well get the book. We survived, they will too.

One of the activities in the book is to let your child drive a car. Now this is practical for a lot of reasons, and once your child can reach the pedals, why not start to teach them? So here we go…

Today [J] (of the Jungle) had his first driving lesson on the Polaris Rzr, which is a side-by-side quad we keep at the farm. Roger and Keith made a mount for my Canon G9 so that we could have a quad-cam along for the ride. So below you can watch the entire video of our first ride around the property. He did a great job! After the first few minutes, he got the steering down just fine (must be all those video games paying off) and the shifting, gas and brake pedals came naturally to him. We took it slow down the main driveway, which winds back and forth quite a bit, and he opened it up a bit when we got to the road and the straight section of the 2nd driveway. He was smiling the whole time! Max came along too. He rode behind us to start then went ahead during the home stretch. You’ll see him in the video. We ran off a gaggle of turkeys in the road and you’ll see that in the video too… barely. I wasn’t controlling the camera or I could have zoomed in on them.

Warning… it’s a pretty long video since we took it kind of slow. But if you want to see a little of our farm, it’s sort of the 5¢ tour. There are more trails, but well, they look a lot alike.

  1. Well thank you for the ride around the farm, J! Michael, {A} and I really enjoyed it! While I was watching, I kept sitting up taller, trying to see over the dash better! That’s just because the camera was down lower I think. But it was a very nice ride anyway. You’re an excellent driver. : )

  2. Cool! Nice job Jack! I have driven a regular quad before, but I bet it wouldn’t even compare to actually driving like you did. Thanks for the tour!

  3. Thanks for sticking it out for that long video. I would love the chance to take you guys on a live tour! Boy the fun we’d have!!! {A}, you’d get plenty of time doing your own driving around. :)

So go on, get the car packed… we’ll expect y’all next week, k?

  4. We talked about the farm, and going there, all through dinner tonight.

  5. Great job [J]!! You are an excellent driver! It sure is beautiful out there! It reminds me of our Grandma K and Papa’s property. Your trails are cleared a little better though. Ours are a little rough in some spots!

  6. @Kipp: Kipp, Roger really has to keep up with them. We’ve got a bush hog that keeps them pretty clear but every now and then we have to go through and cut down the low branches and such. We were lucky that the people we bought it from kept up with them pretty well.

  7. Love the place teri! Thats awesome. I wander watch you shot the video with?

  8. @Jonathan: My little G9 point and shoot… would have been much better with the 5DmkII. I wish I knew how to use it. Just haven’t sat down and figured it out yet. It’s on my to-do list though. Maybe soon you can give me a lesson.

  9. What a great video..and great idea…one day I figure I will see you on the Today Show giving your amazing advice about something. The entire Eddy family rocks!

  10. @Matt: Thanks Matt :) I kind of think you and your sweet little [M] rock too. I appreciate you stopping by the blog to comment.
